Caution is advised when taking substances that increase melatonin levels, such as fluvoxamine, cimetidine, quinolones, estrogens (contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy), and 5 or 8-methoxypsoralen (5 and 8-MOP).
Caution is also advised when taking substances that decrease melatonin levels, such as carbamazepine and rifampicin.
Smoking can decrease melatonin levels.
Should not be combined with anxiolytic medications, MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) antidepressants, or antiplatelet agents.
